6th Grade - Design and Modeling
Design and Modeling provides students opportunities to apply the engineering design process to creatively solve problems. Students are introduced to the unit problem in the first week and are asked to make connections to the problem throughout the lessons in the unit. Students learn and utilize methods for communicating design ideas through sketches, solid models, and mathematical models. Students will understand how models can be simulated to represent an authentic situation and generate data for further analysis and observations. Throughout the unit, students will work in teams to identify design requirements, research the topic, and engage stakeholders. Teams design a toy or game for a child with cerebral palsy, fabricate and test it, and make necessary modifications to optimize the design solution.
7th Grade - Automation and Robotics
Automation and Robots allows students to trace the history, development, and influence of automation and robotics as they learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation, and computer control systems. Students use the VEX Robotics platform to design, build, and program real-world objects such as traffic lights, toll booths, and robotic arms. Students use tools such as the engineering design process, VEX Robotics, and programming software to invent and innovate. Learn how creative thinking and problem solving can change your world!
8th Grade - Medical Detectives
Students explore the biomedical sciences through hands-on projects and labs that require the students to solve a variety of medical mysteries. Students investigate medical careers, vital signs, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases, as well as human body systems. Students will be introduced to the human body as a compilation of body systems. They will analyze how the integument, musculoskeletal, nervous, cardiovascular, and endocrine systems help the body function and maintain healthy living. Genetic testing for hereditary diseases and crime scene analysis put the students in the place of real life medical detectives.
