Back to Band 2020!

Hello CMS Music Family!

We hope you have had the opportunity to make the most of your summer.

As you know our district has announced guidelines for the health and safety of our staff and students. In an effort to minimize the risk of spreading Covid 19 and in order to have music safely in our classrooms, we will follow these guidelines along with further recommendations from the Iowa High School Music Association and the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) . We are opting for the following formats based on current research and suggestions for safe practices from these sources.

Needless to say, things will look a bit differently.

Band at the Middle School:

As we start the school year, we will focus on small performance groups, solos, lessons and music theory.

Each class period will rotate through the following activities:

  • Small group lessons.
    •   Students will work on building skills on their instrument.
  • Music theory and activities.
    • We will focus on the Essential Learning Targets and the process of writing and reading music.
  • Guitar Class.
    • A chance to explore a new instrument. Guitars will be provided.

To be successful in these endeavors, we will need your help.

  • All students will need to wear masks and practice good hand washing hygiene.
  • Instrumental students will need a music mask. This will allow for students to play an instrument while wearing a mask. (provided by school)
  • Bell Coverings for brass instruments. (provided by school)
  • Wind instrument covering. (provided by school)
  • Percussion students will use a regular mask
  • No sharing of instruments will be allowed.  If you are using a school instrument we will make every effort to ensure that you have an instrument. If you currently have a school instrument at home the plan is to have you use that instrument for this year.
  • Students must have their own instrument and equipment.
  • Chairs and stands will be set to meet district guidelines. Please maintain the physical setup of the music rooms.
  • Cleaning and disinfecting of instruments and equipment will occur every day, by every student.

We will provide materials for the special instrument masks.  We will be in need of volunteers to help sew these masks.  If you have the talent and ability to help with the making of these masks please let Ms. Howland or Mrs. McKinney know ASAP.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we navigate through these times.  Protocols may change as the year progresses and new guidance is issued. We will keep you posted through our Facebook page Carlisle 5-8 Bands, our band web page Carlisle MS Bands and with mails.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions.
