LA 10

Dear Parents/Guardians of LA 10 students,

This year we will be reading several works of literature, including Shakespeare’s Macbeth, Yann Martel’s Life of Pi, and one SSR book (of the student’s choice) per quarter.  

At the beginning of the year, we will watch the movie Freedom Writers (rated PG-13), which features students acquiring a real love for composition and literature. The reason for the PG 13-rating is the use of a strong curse word and several references to gang violence. Both of these instances are handled in an educational way, to show that a teacher cares about her students and that violence of any kind is wrong. 

This film is tied closely to our speaking, writing, and reading goals in HMH, as they will be performing a “Toast for Change” focused on one goal they have for this year, writing a personal essay about staying true to themselves, and reading several model essays from the book on which the movie is based. All of these lessons will result in summative grades for the semester.

Please let us know if you are uncomfortable with any of these titles, and we will find an alternate assignment for your student.
